Low Water Pressure in Your House? Causes and Next Steps
Weak flow is rarely one single problem. A few careful observations narrow it down quickly, and some patterns mean you should stop and call instead of troubleshooting.

Start here: when weak pressure is urgent
Most pressure complaints are an annoyance rather than an emergency. These patterns are the exceptions — stop troubleshooting and call:
- Pressure dropped suddenly and you hear water running when every fixture is off.
- A warm or damp patch has appeared on a slab floor, or baseboards feel soft.
- Water looks brown, cloudy or smells unusual — stop drinking it and ask before using it.
- Pressure fell right after work was done on the street or on your service line.
- You can see water surfacing in the yard, or the meter spins with everything shut off.
If a hidden leak is likely, dry any wet indoor area promptly while you arrange service; the EPA's Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home covers why moisture should not sit.
Likely causes, by pattern
These are possibilities to check in person, not a diagnosis of your home.
One fixture only
- Clogged aerator, shower head or fill valve screen — very common where water is hard.
- A partly closed stop valve under the sink or behind the toilet.
- A kinked or aging flexible supply line.
- A worn cartridge inside the faucet or mixing valve.
Hot water only
- Sediment or scale in the water heater or at its outlet.
- A partly closed valve at the heater.
- A scaled inlet screen on a tankless unit.
Whole house
- Main shutoff or meter valve not fully open.
- A failing pressure-reducing valve where one is installed.
- A clogged whole-house filter or a softener stuck in a bypass or regeneration state.
- Corrosion or scale narrowing older galvanized piping.
- A leak in the service line between the meter and the house.
- On a well: pump, pressure switch, or waterlogged pressure tank.
- Utility-side work or a temporary supply issue in the neighborhood.
Safe checks you can do
- Test cold, then hot, at several fixtures and write down which are weak.
- Compare an outside spigot with indoor taps — a strong spigot suggests the problem is inside.
- Unscrew a faucet aerator by hand or with a cloth and look for grit and white scale.
- Confirm accessible stop valves and the main valve are fully open, turning them gently only.
- Turn everything off and watch the meter dial for movement.
- Ask a neighbor whether their pressure changed too.
- Note whether the change was sudden or slow over months, and photograph any gauge you already have.
What not to do
- Do not adjust a pressure-reducing valve or a well pressure switch yourself. Too much pressure damages fixtures and appliances, and a pressure switch sits in an energized enclosure.
- Do not open, wire, or reset pump electrical equipment.
- Do not force a valve that will not turn — old valves snap.
- Do not pour descaling chemicals into supply piping.
- Do not open walls or cut into a slab looking for a leak.
- Do not ignore a running-water sound because pressure is "still usable."
When professional help is warranted
Call when the whole house is affected, when cleaning aerators changed nothing, when the drop was sudden, when you suspect a service-line or slab leak, when a regulator or well system is involved, or when the home has older galvanized piping. Testing static and flowing pressure and isolating sections of the system takes gauges and access that homeowners generally should not improvise. See water pressure solutions for what that work involves.
Have this ready before you call
- A list of which fixtures are weak, and whether hot, cold or both.
- When it started and whether it was sudden or gradual.
- Municipal water or private well; softener or filter present or not.
- Approximate age of the home and, if known, the piping material.
- Photos of the main shutoff, the meter, any regulator, filter, softener or pressure tank.
- Recent water bills if usage jumped.
- Whether neighbors are affected.
- Your address and best callback number.
